From turn-of-the-century trunks and leather luggage, to the pioneering invention of the first lightweight aluminum suitcase in 1937. From the polycarbonate luggage in 2000 to the iconic classic aviation-inspired grooved design, and collaborations with cult brands such as Supreme, Dior, Off-White, Porsche, and Fendi, RIMOWA has earned its place as an emblematic brand with coveted lines and astonishing collector’s items. This new publication by Rizzoli, came out November 2020 to pay homage to the best fixtures of RIMOWA’s past and present, and with it the history of more than a century of travel, incorporating a selection of the most iconic pieces from RIMOWA’s archives through previously unpublished imagery. RIMOWA: AN ARCHIVE, SINCE 1898 starts at the very beginning, in 1898 Cologne, Germany, covering the journey of the brand at the forefront of innovation, with a heritage marked by crafting the highest quality luggage for voyagers of every era. 

Covering 100 years of travel essentials throughout the twentieth century and into the present day, RIMOWA has always met revolutions in transportation with a pragmatic, industrial, and resolutely modern approach. Enriched with photographs, illustrations and other vintage brand ephemera culled from the RIMOWA archive, crafted in Italy and printed on the finest European paper, this oversized tome serves as an ode to RIMOWA’s enduring thirst for innovation and functional approach to modern luxury. The exceptional design of the publication is by Commission Studio, the visual identity and design team that is also behind the Rimowa visual identity designed to celebrate the company’s 12th anniversary.
