Summer state of mind

Ko Samui, one of Thailand’s largest islands, lies in the Gulf off the east coast of Surat Thani Province. Palm-fringed beaches, coconut groves, crystal clear sea, and mountainous rainforest, create the perfect setting for a holiday made in heaven. No wonder this is home of beautiful, luxury resorts and spas. One of the most impressive resorts, that truly takes our breath away with its immaculate aesthetics, is Sala Samui Chaweng Beach Resort, an endeavor that took 5 years in the making. Onion architects started designing the 138-room resort in the scopes of architecture, interior, hardscape including decks and swimming pools, furniture, lighting and object designs, creating an Art Deco destination for today’s world traveler.

Every room has a private swimming pool and a sea view of the ocean, with a maximum open-air space next to the beach and a courtyard that functions as a bright living room, creating a calm and serene environment. In fact, nothing blocks the sea view at Sala. From the largest exterior courtyard to the smallest interior space of every room, the ocean can be seen. Even in the lobby, you can see the sea right away. This is how Onion say they perceive luxury: «It is not about what we build; rather, it is about the space that we decided not to build.»

Daybeds and umbrellas around the circular swimming pools have no direction. There is no particular spot to enter the pool, where Onion has added white swim rings named Onion Ring, as a friendly gesture and a tongue-in-cheek reference to their name. At night, lighting design mimics the ambiance of a full moon mirroring in the water. Onion’s total design direction comes from an observation that our perceptions of the moon change every night, even if the source of light remains the same. Full moon is the time when we see the whole of the moon. Black moon is the period when we see no moon. Crescent moon is the space in between. Everything at Sala Samui Chaweng Beach Resort is designed to express this sequence of light, shade, and shadow.

Onion has opted not to invest in expensive but heartless materials but rather worked with local materials and everyday life objects. What makes these ordinary things appear special are the new forms and ways they are used: Bamboo blinders are transformed into the lobby’s ceiling. Triangular pillows are scaled down and reshaped. The patterns of rattan lamps are redesigned so that the light of each lamp appears different. Coconut shells are used as lamps or table legs. In a simple and intelligent manner, Sala Samui delivers uninhibited luxury the way it is supposed to: Effortlessly.
