Beautiful solitude

Blending in with the environment while, at the same time, standing out by creating imposing structures of clever design, has always been the architectural world’s holy grail. Living in the Desert, a new publication by Phaidon, surveys the finest examples of contemporary architecture located right in the heart of the toughest of grounds, the desert. Fifty contemporary houses, cleverly built to withstand the harsh conditions or thoughtfully designed to complement the sun-soaked setting, this is a collection that invites the reader to admire mesmerizing buildings positioned within the dramatic backdrop of stark desert landscapes.

The desert has always attracted creative minds that love the seclusion of the wild. The book travels to U.S, Europe, Asia, Australia and beyond, creating a stylish tool for those looking to discover innovative ways to work within a tough but radiant environment. The challenges faced by the architects lead, sometimes, to iconic projects and unusual edifies: Like ‘Mirage’, a completely mirrored building designed to appear as a glowing, otherworldly entity in it’s rocky surroundings, a modern Iranian house looking to fit in with its village aesthetics by using an innovative plaster made of sand and straw, and sleek stylized pods perched on low stilts within Mexico’s ‘wine country’ consciously designed to limit the destruction of the panorama. Get inspired by the harmony of architecture in the natural world and discover the way creativity can lead to beauty.
